Active Directory is the Windows service that stores information about all objects on the computer network and makes this information easy for administrators and users to find and apply. With the Active Directory, users can access resources anywhere on the network with a single logon. Similarly, administrators have a single point of administration for all objects on the network, which can be viewed in a hierarchical structure.

A central component of the Windows platform, Active Directory directory service provides the means to manage the identities and relationships that make up network environments. Windows Server 2003 makes Active Directory simpler to manage, easing migration and deployment.
